Wishing you a Great Festive Season! |
Welcome to the final Starlink for 2009.
And no, you haven't imagined it - there has been a significant gap since the last issue! Our apologies for that - it was the result of a very heavy workload over the last couple of months, including attending the 2009 World Appreciative Inquiry conference in Kathmandu in November.
Sue also was a volunteer member of the Adivisory Board and the online planning team for the accompanying online conference. A full-time job for several weeks before the event! :)
However we hope you'll find this issue of Starlink was worth the wait. You'll find a number of resources here and in the pdf file, downloadable from the link to the right.
In the pdf copy you'll also find links to photo slideshows of our trip to Nepal, and information about our visit to Chitwan where we met some wonderful village women who have sustained savings-led village banks for 10 years now with amazing results!
Our thanks for some of the Starlink items this month to Mandy Barrow, Jim Evers, Anne Hugo, Jen Hetzel Silbert, Maggie Verster and J. Kim Wright.
May we wish you all the very best for the festive season - and a wonderful start to 2010!
Cheers
Sue & Chris

Movie Time |
To finish off the year, here are some great online movies to inspire you or make you smile ...
The first one is called The Man I Know. It's a moving piece about a man and his father, who has Alzheimers.
Choose Inspiration is another short piece about the choices we make ... every day.
Forever's Not So Long is a wonderfully creative movie. Written and directed by Shawn Morrison, it is only 13 minutes long and has achieved recognition in short film categories at several film festivals.
Here's real a blast from the past for teachers! A film called Maintaining Classroom Discipline, made in 1947. The film style may be very dated now, but it does go to show there are a few things about teaching that have remained much the same for over 50 years. :)
And now from the old to the new... Here's an fascinating TED talk from David Merrill about Siftables, small computerized tiles that can be stacked, shuffled and played with in your hands. They calculate, communicate with one another and can even play music.
Finally, a cute video about dogs: What Makes a Dog a Man's Best Friend. Did you know that 'slobber is good for the soul'? :) This movie is courtesy of Gabriel's Angels, a nonprofit that provides healing pet therapy to abused, neglected and at-risk children.

Holiday Time
|
No doubt you are looking forward to a well-deserved break over Christmas and the New Year.
Here are a few things that you might like to waste ... oops, spend some time doing over your holidays! :)
First of all, be sure to spend some time daydreaming - not only is it relaxing, but it's also good for you!
Here's something a little more active. Amaze your family and friends with these Top 10 quirky science tricks for Christmas parties
And if your brain feels a little sludgy after all the Christmas and New Year festivities, give it some exercise. Visit Games for the Brain or Braingle for lots of online games, brain teasers, puzzles, quizzes and other fun stuff.
Last but not least, why not do a good deed in the new year? Support a worthy cause and adopt a lost word! :) Visit the Save the Words site to find out how. As this site says, Each year, hundreds of words are dropped from the English language. Old words, wise words, hard-working words ... You can change all that. Help save the words!
Have fun! :)
